Made from all scrap yarn. The only thing I had to buy were the eyes. I modified the pattern a little bit, because that’s what I do.
BODY: I started off by knitting the body in the round. I casted on the 32 stitches the pattern called for and started my decreases when the pattern said to. (Originally I followed the pattern and his head came out very pointy, I then had to stuff the hell out of his head to round it out which stretched the stitches to the point the fiber fill could be seen AND his head was still pointy!) I tinked back and stopped after I decreased to 8 stitches, knit for 2 rows, cut the thread and pulled it through the 8 remaining stitches on the needles.
EARS: I did not do the garter ridge on the ears because I didn’t like the rough edge look it creates. Instead I completely knit one side and completely purled the back slipping the first stitch on each row to create a smooth edge. Stitching them on was a bit of a pain (I recommend sewing them on with the body stuffed). I sewed them on in a C shape so that the slipped edge still curled and the ears were deep and not a straight line up his head.
NOSE: I knotted a piece of green yarn in two places fairly close together, for nostrils, and then stitched that to the face with two vertical stitches.
EYES: Buttons are 13mm.
BASE: The base didn’t make much sense to me. How does he stay upright if he’s round but his bottom is a straight line? Instead I made a circular base that will then be sewn to the body’s CO edge.
CO 3sts
Row 1: P
Row 2: Kfb each st. (6 sts)
Row 3: P
Row 4: Kfb each stitch. Divide sts evenly among 3 dpns (4 sts on each). Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 5 and ALL ODD NUMBERED ROUNDS: K
Rnd 6: *K1fb, k1; rep from * around (18 sts, 6 sts each dpn)
Rnd 8: *K1fb, k1; rep from * around (27 sts, 9 sts each dpn)
Rnd 10: *K1fb, k2; rep from * around (36 sts, 12 sts on each dpn)
Rnd 12: BO on WS, weave in ends and sew up CO hole. Attach to stuffed body.
ROBE: I wanted this to be two colours to match an image I found online where the button/zipper placket is lighter than the rest of the garment and matches his cowl. The lighter colour I’m using is fingering weight so I’ve held it triple (my first time knitting with more than a single thread). Using 4.5 mm needles I casted on 3 stitches of tan and 40 stitches of brown. I knit in stockette stitch for 33 rows (5 inches), switching between the tan and the brown all the way up to create the fake placket. I then switched to using only the tan for 11 rows (1.5 inches) for the cowl and bound off on the RS.
ARMS: I CO 8 of green yarn on 5 mm dpns, K 4 rounds, decreased to 4 sts by k2tog, didn’t bind off but pull yarn through remaining sts like the top of a hat.
CO 10 sts of brown yarn on same dpns, K for 16 rounds (2 inches) , switched to the tan yarn (which I held tripled up because it’s fingering weight) and knit for 6 rounds (1 inch) and then bound off fairly loose for me (I knit tight so this is probably a normal persons bind of tension). I flipped the cuffs inside out and sewed the hands into place where the brown transitioned to tan so that they don’t show. I then sewed the cuff into place on the sleeve to prevent it from moving or flipping back over. Repeated for other arm.
I stuffed these and sewed them onto the body/robe pretty high up so that the attachment point is covered by the folded over cowl.
