I joined the square using a sc (UK dc) working from the front so the join stands proud. If you are going to use this join always make sure that you start from the same side and work in the same direction or your joins will not lie the same way :)

For the border, I used a blanket stitch (sc, ch1, miss a stitch. Repeat from). I put sc, ch1, sc in the corner stitch, but you may want to do a ch2 as this left the corners slightly curled.
