I don’t know how much or what type of yarn to use for this pattern. I bought it on Etsy and the details of the book or pamphlet it was originally in are gone.
The only thing I know from the PDF that I purchased is that the name of the pattern is Lady’s Bed Cape. Which ravelry is not showing, I guess because it’s not in their database?
I will add what I know to ravelry eventually.
Lady’s bed cape in Coats CAREFREE Bri-Nylon Baby Quick Knit
10 oz
Milward Disc crochet hooks No 7, No 8 and No 9.
3 buttons
To fit 34-38 in bust
Length at centre back 16 ins. approx.
And so you can see that I am going to be doing a lot of guessing!
I am guessing as to the yarn that I am using, too. I am using 3 cones of yarn, held together, that only have the manufacturer’s name inside the cone. No color or anything else. I do believe this is a synthetic yarn, acrylic or nylon or something.
3 strands held together because I have 3 cones.
I am guessing the hook sizes at G - 6, H - 8, I - 9. I don’t have a #7 in my Boye aluminum hooks. I am not looking at thread hooks.
I am using cones of yarn from the 1980s. It is all lace weight. I have no idea how much yarn is on each cone. They all appear to be used to various degrees.
I am going to use 3 cones of the light mint held together.
And 2 cones of medium mint plus 1 cone of slightly darker medium mint yarn for the accents.
Error in pattern - body
The pattern does not match the picture. To match the picture -> At end of 3rd repeat, add repeat rows 2 - 5.
pattern does not say
Before starting on yoke, switch back to smallest hook.
This is turning out to be a bit longer than I wanted. Considering that I have no idea what size hooks were used in the pattern, I am lucky to be this close to the original design.
I am done with the crocheting part. Wow, it sure turned out nicer than I thought it would. I need to find some buttons and then get it cleaned up and steamed flat. Then it will be ready to gift.
Note - I was not able to steam it “flat”. It has better drape and the spider stitches opened up. Added some length.
Buttons - 3/4 in length buttons. The ones I chose had a vintage sparkly look to them and were oval in shape.
Dimenstions
pre-block
center back bottom edge to neckline - 18 in
neckline circumference - 14 in (base of collar measured)
post-block (steamed)
center back to neckline - 21 in
neckline circumference - 14 in (did not steam this area)
(Not sure what would be good measurements for a bed cape!)
Hindsight - the length of the cape is longer than I wanted. I believe that could be controlled depending on the size hooks you used as you started each spider section. I believe the largest hook was used on the top section to make room for the shoulders.
