Notes

i am using the modified chart from dbkea’s Skull Shawl. This is the continuous eye version. i think i would kill myself if i had to sew each set of eyes on separately.

we will see how it works.

I am using a larger hook so get a bit larger skull going on and a lacier effect. it may take some experimenting to get everything the size i want.

i only have 3 balls of this thread. when it runs out, it runs out. i may have to use a contrast color of some sort for the border i want to add.

i have decided that the forward chain works great for the nose and eye sockets. it helps those areas to lay flat and be easy to work into. LOVE how this is working out with the forward chain. no issues at all with tight chains. all the stitches lay flat and look very nice.

i have substituted a hdc for a sc on the chin only. a very subtle bit larger chin but i think it helps.

i am on my 3rd ball of thread. i figured i had better finish up when i could see my 2nd ball was ending. hopefully i will have enough for the border. it’s going to be a shawlette. LOVE how the skull pattern worked out for what i was doing.

i think the neck edge need reinforcing which should help it to lay flat and straight. I ended the last row with NO chain 8 spaces on both ends. Turn and did a row of hdc around the entire shawl to prepare for a border and to smooth out the neck edge.

I switched to the navy blue and did a hdc row for both of the diagonals, then turned and started the following border. i felt that i needed at least 2 rows of hdc on the diagonals to try and smooth out the edges.

Note to self: If i work this again, then shorten the turning chain to 6 or if needed 7. but 6 should be smoother.

at the end of my hdc row, i did a ch 6 (ch 3 for the first dc and then ch 3 for the ch sp), then i started with a 3dc cluster in the next place where the edge meets a stitch. alternating the dc and the cluster with ch 3 in between down the side. see notes below for working border.

i like the border that LibbyLiz’s Skull Shawl used and so am going to do it here.

I alternated 1 dc and a 3 dc cluster in each of the parts of the edge where it met a stitch. I chained 3 in between. Second row was a dc in the dc, ch 2 and in each cluster I made a 2 dc cluster, chain 3 and another 2 dc cluster. My 3rd row was a shell of 7 dcs in the loop between the clusters, 1 chain and a sc in the dcs. I made a modified shell at the point.

I did 9 dc in the shell at the tip.

Dimensions
pre-block
neck edge width - 66 inches
center back deep- 23.5 inches

post block
width - 73 in
deep - 28 in

it turned out a bit larger than i thought. it looks like it could be a full size shawl for my daughter who is petite. i will just have to see how large it is after it is blocked.

BEWARE of the Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread: This crochet thread is NOT color fast.
