Notes

I am holding 5 strands of lace weight together to get the worsted weight. Yep, that’s 5 cones of yarn!

Reading other project notes, this pattern is supposed to have trouble with curling. But I need a hat to finish in the last few days before Christmas. I just frogged another hat pattern because it had a horrible seam for joining. I need it to look nicer.

Size
There are no sizing instructions for this hat. I am going to have to use instructions from a different hat on how large to make the crown. I want to aim for a hat with a 21 in brim.

Crown
Hmmm. She says not to use any turning or starting chains until you get to round 3. But the 1st 2 rows are dc. How exactly would you start those rounds without some sort of starting chain? I just did a ch 2 for each of rounds 1 and 2. It looks just fine.

The other projects complain about the hat curling. Yep, by Round 5, the curl is definitely there. I think the reason this hat curls is all of the front post stitches.

The other projects say that after you get past the body then the curling stops.

My crown measures 5 inches in diameter. I will measure again after the increases in the body. Others have complained about the hat being too large. I am aiming for a 6 inch diameter.

Body
Not sure I like the following statement. I will just have to see how it looks. I would think that she would have been able to adjust the increases. Maybe not.

Note: on increase rounds, some fpdc will end up being worked in fpdc and some dc will end up on top of dc - this is fine and not visible in the finished product.

On round 7, I am at 6.25 inches diameter. Which means I don’t want to do the next row as an increase row. I am going to mark this row and see how it goes.

It is easy to hide your increases in Round 6 by always doing them with a front post stitch. You put your increase dc into either side of the same stitch as the post stitch. It may go in front of the post stitch or behind the post stitch, just depending where you are at. In this way, you go all the way around without ever having to put a dc into a post stitch unless it’s an increase. Works great.

Diameter = 6.5 inches aiming for a circumference of 21 inches.

With a little fiddling, I increased 2 more stitches on Round 7 for a total of 62 stitches. Gives me a diameter of 6.5 in. I am moving on to the body stitch pattern.

body repeat pattern
Pattern says to do this for alternating pattern for rows 9-15. It does not give you a length estimate. This pattern is definitely not very clear on what you should be doing. I will go back to other hat patterns and see how long the length of the hat should be, above the brim.

Most of the hats in the project pictures look pretty short and small to me as for as the hat goes. I am not looking for a skull cap look. I am looking for a hat that will fit either a guy or a gal with a 21 inch circumference accounting for a 2 inch negative ease. That seams to be the standard in other hat patterns.

I do like this stitch pattern. It’s a nice hat pattern. It just needs more instructions about how to make the right size. Thank goodness I didn’t start making Xmas Hats with this pattern. I would have been lost.

I am on round 16 and my body side measures 3 inches in length!!! lol … Definitely going to be adding a few more rows to the body of the hat before I start the brim.

No idea how many rows of the body pattern I did. I ended when the body pattern was 6.5 inches long.

Brim/Edging
sc row done per pattern. Turned and worked blo for dc row so that brim will fold up.

Again the instructions are unclear. For 4 rows, you are supposed to fpdc and bpdc - alternating. Fine for the first row but the remaining ones? Do you put fp on fp or fp on bp? No instructions. I am going to try to go by what the pattern photo looks like.

Dimensions
crown diameter = 6.5 inches
length of body = 7.25 inches
ribbing = 3 inches
circumference (bottom of hat) = 22 inches
