Cast 39sts on 3.5mm dpns, using a central double decrease.
Using up a bunch of leftovers and mini skeins.

Working on this here and there. I’m not really one for a big, structured project - that kind of rips all the fun out of it for me - so I’m just kind of making it up as I go.

Learned the ‘magic knot’ join today. A gamechanger for someone like me who hates weaving in the ends!

Finally got some pics of the blanket. I’ve been pretty slow at adding squares due to moving house twice in the past few months.
Also, a group of us knitters in NZ started up a mini swap group so hopefully that’ll get some fresh blood, er, yarn into the blankie. I’m pretty damn excited about this. I’ve ordered minis from overseas but the exchange rate and shipping is brutal, so it’s fantastic to have a mini swap in my own country.
I have to admit, when I lay the blanket out like this and take a step back to look at it I’m actually pretty proud of it. I love the colours and I’m enjoying using all the different yarns. :D

Pulled this out of hibernation and started working on it again. Turns out my gauge has changed a bit since I last worked on this which is a bit annoying. Up to 216 squares now so slowing trucking along.

I’ve been working on this in bits and pieces. I found out that some of the yarns I used were not superwash like I thought (used same yarns in a pair of socks that felted), so I’ve started adding some bits of handspun I’ve made. I keep meaning to weave in the ends of all the squares already added but it’s just hit summer where I am and it’s far too hot to have this on me while working in all the ends.
Just one of the cons of knitting the blanket as separate squares rather than picking up stitches and adding the squares a I knit them, I guess. BUT it does mean I dont have to always sit under a hot, heavy blanket any time I work on it. :)

Did a tally and calculated I’m almost half way through the amount of squares I need, yay! I was super motivated until I realised that if I stick with knitting one a day (or less) like I currently am doing it’ll take me over a year to finish.
I need to up my game.

I do still work on this on occasion. In fits and bursts really.
I’m starting to wish I had made this smaller. Maybe 3 rows of each colour instead of 4? Way too late now.
I’m not sure I’m going to go for my full original size of 28x28 squares. 28x24 might be big enough. But then when I think about that I think why not go for the full 28 row? What’s another 112 squares between friends? I really am my own worst enemy.
Blanky is currently sitting at 473 total squares.
I really need to get more reds. And to work on this blanket some more. My current mindless knitting project is a shawl but hopefully I’ll get back to this soon.

Blanket Stats (aka motivation for me to finish)
- Pink - 80/112 (32 left)
- Purple - 80/112 (32 left)
- Blue - 81/112 (31 left)
- Green - 71/112 (41 left)
- Yellow - 77/112 (35 left)
- Orange - 67/112 (45 left)
- Red - 75/112 (37 left)
531/784
The totals are based on if I keep to my 28x28 square blanket plan. The numbers might be off as this is the 3rd time I’m noting this down as Rav randomly deleted the other two so my patience is non-existent right now ;p
Seeing it broken down into colours like that (especially noting how many squares left to knit) is a big motivator for me. Makes it feel like not such an insurmountable task anymore haha
Just gotta keep with it. The end is in sight.
One thing does keep nagging occasionally in the back of my brain though
How the fuck am I ever going to wash this?

Had a real talk with myself today about the state of this blanket and my lofty goal of finishing it to the size that I originally planned.
The blanket (and the minis) sit in a basket next to my bed so it’s the last thing I see before going to sleep at night and the first thing I see in the morning. I spend more time thinking about it than actually working on it and it’s been causing me a low level of anxiety for a while now as I feel like a failure for not working on it/finishing it.
Knitting is supposed to be enjoyable and if I’m avoiding working on this because I don’t have the time to knit squares as well as my other projects then feeling bad because I’m not working on it then the logical course of action is to cut myself some slack and finish this to an achievable size then maybe add more to it at a later date if I feel like it.
I do still genuinely love this project. It’s been with me since near the beginning of my knitting journey and I don’t want to start resenting it because it represents biting off more than I could chew and failing finishing something. It’s beautiful and I want to enjoy it instead it of being in a project bag next to my bed.
So my new goal is to finish of the current row is squares I’m on and call it finished so I can start using the blankie. This feels a lot more achievable than the other goals I set myself for this project lol
If I decide to add more to it down the line, cool beans. If I don’t then I’m happy with that and will enjoy the blanket as is :)

Checked how much I have left to do on this blanket and it turns out I only have two squares left to knit and about ten to attach.
Damn, I didn’t realise that I had been so close to the finish line for at least six months XD

Guess who has two thumbs and accidentally knit too many squares?
This girl.
Guess who also has two thumbs and is pretty sure she has a finished blanket?
This fucking girl!
I’ve woven in the ends and I still need to check to make sure I’m not missing any squares but I’m fairly sure I’ve finally finished this gigantic rainbow monster!
It’s been a long time in the making and, honestly, I would have been finished at least three years ago if I had just knit and sewn in the last few squares but she’s done and I’m over the moon about that!
I’ll take a photo of I ever find a space big enough to spread it out.
This blanket was a very, very long time in the making.
It features yarns from all over the world.
It’s grown with me as I’ve grown as a knitter; featuring some of my earliest knitting attempts in it.
I think it might even have some of my hand spun in it. It definitely has my hand dyed yarn in it.
It is a collection of time, of effort, of talented indie dyers, of yarns from around the world, of perseverance, of love, and of memories.
