Notes

This is my first project that is a fitted piece of clothing and as such it is also my first project for which I am measuring gauge. My first swatch was a bit small, but also ultimately showed me something I kind of already knew, and that is that my tension is fairly tight.

My second swatch, though I never took it off the needles, satisfied me enough that I was comfortable proceeding with a newer, looser, grip.

Hem to Body transition

At the hem to body transition, I used the technique given here so that it would appear seamless.

While the loops from slipping the knits in 2×2 ribbing are definitely more prominent than those shown in the example picture of 1x1 ribbing on the linked site, they are on the inside of the sweater and should be fine.

I used a right leaning backwards loop on increases to the right of center, and left leaning to the left of center. Increases were placed in-between the two purl stitches of a purl rib on the final row, with six increases each side of the center.

On the final WS of ribbing, with p being a purl rib without an increase and P being one with, I placed my increases as follows:

pPpPppPpPppPpPpPpPppPpPppPpPp

While this may not be a perfectly even distribution across the row, it does evenly distribute six increases across each half of the row while slightly accentuating the center, which I preferred.

Error in Pattern - Body

  1. For sizes 2X+ it is not mentioned to switch from the smaller needles to the larger, but only explicitly stated to do so for the other sizes. I have personally done so regardless; hopefully I will not run short of yarn due to this.

  2. Again for sizes 2X+, the second row in the pattern for the body starts with a set of purls followed by a few knits before Panel Pat A. However, the first row only has a set of knits following Panel Pat A, meaning those few knits near the beginning of the second row are in error (unlike how the pattern progresses for the other sizes).

This could be corrected in any number of ways, but seeing as I only realized this upon encountering it I personally opted to simply omit the offending knit stitches instead of redesigning to allow for a more symmetrical solution, which is what I would recommend to others going forward.

I have now completed up to the point on the back body of the sweater where I will have to begin decreases for the armholes.

As per the preferences of the recipient, I have increased the length of the body by a couple inches so that the hem may rest below the hip line.

My row gauge has ended up being slightly tight over this length, as I have knitted 90 rows for the body which yielded 19”, instead of the expected 20”. Though perhaps this is due to the cable pattern whereas the gauge was measured in stockinette.

I have now fully completed the back side of the body of the sweater, with the armholes, shoulders, and neck fully shaped.

Continuing from my comment during my work on the body, my row gauge is still slightly tight, taking me 46 rows to achieve the desired 9 1/2 “ for the armholes. Furthermore, I can only conclude that the row gauge of the sweater used in pictures for the instructions is very tight since they get further up the centre pattern than I do, and yet I increased my body length by 2” over the design.

I haven’t updated this project in a while, but I have still been working on it in between some smaller projects.

I just recently had to rip back 17 rows to the beginning of the armholes as I had inadvertently followed the pattern for a different sizing from that point. Oops! At least I caught it! I will upload another picture once I have completed the front half and am finally ready to begin the sleeves.

05-06-2023

Finally completed the front half of the sweater today. Only thing of note was that I incorporated a Bias Bind-Off between the two rows of bind-offs on each shoulder so the edge seems to be much more of a slope than a staircase. This of course means the shoulder seams are now different on both sides and I may well have to redo them on either the front or the back because of this. If I end up doing this, I will of course update it here.

While working on the sleeves, I noticed that I have not recorded here which increases and decreases I have been using throughout the project, which is something I know I personally like to know when looking at the projects of others.

I have used the following decreases throughout the body and will use them again towards the end of the sleeves as well as in the cap if necessary:

  • RS: At the beginning of the needles (right hand side when looking at the work) -> SSK
  • RS: At the end of the needles (left hand side when looking at the work) -> K2TOG
  • WS: At the beginning of the needles (right hand side when looking at the work) -> P2TOG
  • WS: At the end of the needles (left hand side when looking at the work) -> SSP

I have used the following increases on the body and sleeves and will use them in the cap if necessary:

  • Last row of ribbing in transition to pattern, on a WS row: M1BL - both left and right variants

  • WS: At the beginning of the needles (right hand side when looking at the work) -> PLL

  • WS: At the end of the needles (left hand side when looking at the work) -> PRL
