INSTRUCTIONS

RIBBING

ROW 1: Leaving a 12-inch tail, ch 17. Turn, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each chain across. (15 sts)

ROW 2: Ch 2, turn, hdcbl across. (15 sts).

ROW 3 to 40: Repeat row 2 until piece measures 19 inches. (For a smaller or larger hat, work the number of rows needed for a comfortable fit around head, keeping total number of rows even.)

For teen/women size using 2 strands held together of soft worsted acrylic yarn, 40 rows (20 ribs) = 19 inches.
Using tail, sew last row to first row to create a band.

CROWN

Round 1: Working on row ends, spread 3 sc over 2 row ends (increases total st count by 1/3), picking up front loops only. Repeat around. Sl st to first st, mark st. (60 sts for band of 40 rows)

Round 2 to 10: Ch 1. Working in the round, hhdc in each st around until piece measures 8 inches from bottom (about 10 rows). At marked st, finish round with a sl st; fasten off leaving a 30-inch tail.

Using tail, sew seam along top edge. Finished hat is a flat rectangle, but corners (ears) pop up when worn on the head. If desired, accentuate shape of ears: flatten, then secure with a strand of yarn and tie in a bow.
