Notes

Inspired by Brenda-Leigh Bennett’s game day lap blanket
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/game-day-lap-bla...

i made a loose foundation sc out of a separate yarn and a k hook.

the pattern is a modified shell pattern, 7dc shell clusters as opposed to the regular 5dc. the reason i modified it was to eat up more yarn so the project wouldn’t be too long for a baby blanket. this project i have here is a half sequence (zig zag). it is 20 shells across on row 1. there are 10 colors in a sequence, making a total of 40 shells in an entire sequence. (rows 1 and 2 on this blanket equal an entire color sequence).

color sequence (using 7dcclusters)
4 white
4 grey
5 green
3 coral
4 black
3 coral
5 green
4 grey
4 white
4 yellow

i planned this look in particular by using the following color pattern:

row 1:
2 white
4 grey
5 green
3 coral
4 black
2 coral

row 2:
1 coral(4dc half cluster counts as a whole shell cluster)
5 green
4 grey
4 white
4 yellow
3 white (2 whole shell clusters and a 4dc half cluster)

1 skein measured 48” long by 6” wide.
i wanted my corals to start and end in the corners. therefore, this blanket took 7 skeins to get this look.

modified shell pattern:
row 1: on foundation row- sc in first stitch, * sk 2 stitches, 7dc in next stitch, sk 2 stitches * , sc in next stitch, repeat * to * , ending the row with a sc.
row 2: row 2 and every even row will start and end with half shells (4dc with this modified pattern).

tips:
1) i used a separate yarn in a complimenting solid color for my foundation row (foundation single crochet tutorial by moogly blog here: http://www.mooglyblog.com/foundation-single-crochet-fsc/ )
2) i didn’t use different size hooks for the main blanket. i used a k hook throughout, but i changed my tension the entire time making sure that i tightened and loosened tension to ensure there were the same number of shells in my color sequence each time. this is especially useful on the odd rows with the half shells. i crocheted the beginning and end of those rows very loose because of the 4dc half shell.
3) row 1 should be full shells.
row 2 will have half shells (4dc) on the ends.

update on foundation chain and border:
i originally used a white yarn for this, but later decided it wasn’t a match. so i used a gold yarn and went in front of the existing white fsc with a gold rsc. i continued with this gold for the rest of the border and ripped out the original white fsc.
