US 6 for the body; US 7 for i-cord BO around sleeve cuffs.

Recreating a favorite old commercial knit cardigan. Really
love the silhouette, V-neck, and pockets. Cables are simple, but interesting. Original sweater knit at 4 sts/in in stockinette. 12-st cables are 2.5’’ wide. I’m using a worsted weight yarn at 5 sts/in in stockinette. Need 15 sts to match original width of cable. Original sweater has 4 rev st st sts between cables, so I will use 5.

After trying on the sweater, I realize that the armholes are deeper than I like these days and the top of the sleeve is larger in circumference than I like. Original sweater has 2x2 cable decreases to shape the armholes and sleeve cap, but no UA bind off. I will plan a re-design of the sleeves, as well as modify some of the other details.

Original sweater has 2’’ wide buttonbands worked in single brioche (fisherman’s rib), with a machine sewn buttonhole in one of the brioche ditches. Trying to figure out how to create a 3/4’’ long vertical buttonhole by hand to replicate it.

Pockets are 5’’ wide, so do not span entire width of two cables + dividing rev st st columns.

Planning to add a couple of intarsia cables in red to the gray sweater. One on the back, one on a sleeve, and maybe the pocket ribbings on the front in red. Plan to work the red cables so that they mirror the gray cables. Might be fun to finish the buttonholes with red embroidery floss, using buttonhole stitch, and/or line the pockets in red.

Will plan to knit a seamless inset pocket.

Sweater will be worked bottom up, in pieces, and seamed. May work sleeves with PCO so that I can knit the cuffs to preferred length. Thinking about longer cuffs that can flip back.

Finalizing design. Created a new center back panel with symmetrical cable so that I can mirror the cables on the fronts and back.

CO for sleeve, using new center panel idea to allow me to mirror sleeve cables. Knitting in the round, maintaining k2 across “seamline.” Knitting cables in the round while also keeping track of increases is a big pain in the butt, particularly with dark yarn. Belt and suspenders approach to tracking row counts: chart with highlighter tape, plus locking stitch markers in the fabric.

Finally think I have decided how to handle this sweater.
I will mirror the cables on the front, and keep the rest of the cables leaning right. I have not come up with a solution for dealing mirroring the back and sleeves that I like. In order to mirror on those pieces, which have an odd number of cables, I’d need to do something up the center of each that was symmetrical, and nothing looks good.

I will have an issue on the shoulders (one shoulder will have rc cables joined to lc cables, while the other will have rc joining rc. The original sweater had all rc cables, which doesn’t blend well with the V neck. So I’m trading one issue for another, but it’s an issue I prefer over the original.

Using US 3 for alternating 2x2 CO for ribbing, and using for first row, then switching to US 4. Using US 6 for the body and US 5 for 3N i-cord BO at top of pockets.

6 full repeats for RF, then mark side selvedge for sleeve. 2x2 cable dec

Left front complete, including shoulder shaping. Did shoulder shaping for right front and for back. Blocking left front. Still need to do 3N i-cord BO for pocket top, then the seaming before doing the brioche button band.

button/buttonhole band completed. Wahoo! And the sleeves, which I thought were going to be too short seem to be juuuusst long enough. Maybe.

I may just finish this thing, at long last.
