Recap of pattern errors

  • Underarm BO for sleeves are not centered, and are a stitch short. BO number should match that of the body, with 1 st more BO on the left edge of the sleeve (end of round) than the right (BOR)
  • For body, after Rnd 1 and 2 establish the ribbing pattern, both should be repeated, not just Rnd 2.
  • Instructions for back of neck shaping indicates to start when total length of AH is an inch shorter than total required length for AH. There are 8 rows of shoulder shaping, but it’s 4 rows on each side, which only adds 4 rows of total length, leaving the back AH too short. Work a couple extra rows before starting the shaping.
  • For 2nd size, there are 4 armhole decs on each side of the back, but instructions for front say to work 5. That will leave you a stitch short (15, instead of 16 sts).
  • Neckband PU rate is 3 sts for every 4 rows, but does not state PU rate for the horizontal edge of the back of the neck. I PU 1:1, as is typical.

Mystified by the instruction to work the side sts as a regular K st while working waist and bust shaping, as the established st patt has them as ktbl.

Plan to work selvedges as plain knits to make seaming and stitch PU easier. Keeping UA sts live. BO back of neck in patt, but without twisting the knits to keep some stretch, and make PU easier.

Yarn requirements vs usage Pattern calls for 1350 yds for the second size. I’m using Cascade 220, which has 220 yds/100 g. 6 skeins would only give me 1320, 30 yds short, so I bought 7 skeins. In the end, with the modest scoop neck and full length sleeves, I used 5 full skeins (just a few yards remaining), so I have 2 full skeins left over.

Pattern starts with working the sleeves, first. It’s a nice way of understanding the three cables in Cable Panel A. I’ll move on to the body after the first sleeve, and save the second one for last. So far, just past the sleeve increases, and ready to work the straight part of the sleeve. 10%

11-22-2023

Up to rnd 111 on the sleeve. 16 more to go before cap shaping. 14%

11-23-2023

First sleeve complete. 19% Underarm is only 11 sts, which is about 2’’. Fairly narrow. I BO in pattern to boot, with those ktbls reducing the stretch. Thinking about removing the BO chain, snipping from the center, to leave enough tail to weave in, and leaving the sts live so I can graft them to the body sts. The sleeve is a close fit, which is fine, but the UA BO is just too tight.

Removed chain and fit is much better. Haven’t decided if I will graft the underam sts or do a half-hitch BO.

12-14-2023

Distracted by other projects, just now casting on for the body today.

12-25-2023

Almost up to the armholes. Just about done with the third skein. About 60% complete.

12-26-2023

Up to the UA and front neck BO. 65%

12-27-2023

Working my way up the back, getting close to the neck and shoulder shaping. 71%

For the back neck bind offs, I worked the sts as required for that row, as knits or purls, and crossing cables, but I did not work knits tbl, in order not to reduce the stretch too much.

12-29-2023

Body finished and shoulders seamed. Hooray! 77%

Armhole/neck decrease instructions for 2nd size (possibly others, I didn’t check) are slightly off.

For each front, you start with 32 sts. You are then supposed to simultaneously decrease at the neck and armhole edge. While there were 4 armhole decreases for the back, the instructions for the front were to work 5 armhole decreases. There were supposed to be 11 neck decreases, including 1 double decrease (i.e. 12 sts actually eliminated). 5 AH dec and 12 neck dec would bring the stitch count down to 15 sts, not 16. I decided to go ahead with the 5 AH dec and didn’t work the final neck decrease, because (for this size) that kept the stitch pattern along the straight part of the neck looking better than if I had kept that neck dec and eliminated the AH dec.

The neckline decreases were supposed to be k2tog and ssk, which are untwisted decreases. Because the entire sweater is worked with ktbl, I used twisted decreaeses, instead. I used k2tog tbl instead of ssk, and I did a right-leaning twisted decrease instead of a k2tog (I swapped the positions of the two sts, crossing the left st over the right st, and then worked them together tbl.

I used these decreases for body shaping, as well, leaning the decreases toward the sides. Occasionally, I used purl dec, if that was what was needed to maintain the stitch pattern.

01-01-2024

Neckband completed. 80% End of ball 4. I will only need 5 skeins of yarn, not 6. (About 1100 yds)

01-06-2024

Second sleeve begun 85%

01-07-2024

All the increases finished for sleeve #2. 91.%

01-08-2024

Knitting complete! 99% Just need to wash and block, sew in the sleeves, and weave in the ends.

01-19-2024

Finally sewed in the sleeves! 100%
