Notes

A gift for my daughter who is a big history aficionado. I incorporated secret messages into these mittens by using the knitting Morse Code technique used by spies in wartime. Each mitten contains an hilarious phrase from comediennes we love and have become part of our family vernacular.
I’ve never knitted mittens before, couldn’t get my head around how to do the code in the round so I knitted them flat and lengthways to keep track of the chart I made for each word. I cast on using a provisional cast on, incorporated some short rows to span the palm, and used Kitchener stitch to join it all at the end. The join looked really untidy so I did some embroidery over the top to cover it up.
For the thumbs I just did some rows of half double crochet.
Due to the number of stitches needed for some words the mittens needed to be quite long, but can be folded back if needed.
I loved researching and figuring out this project!
