Inspired by a 2016 blanket by’Anita Havel Powell, seen on this blog:

Trad granny square, one per day.
R1/centre : the month’s birthstone gem, yarn combined with a sparkly Gütermann thread
R2 : lowest temp
R3 : highest temp
R4 : joining colour (JAYG) - grey
I used a different colour per 2°Celsius from 0°C to 28°C. Separate colour used for anything under 0°C, likewise for 29°+ degrees, as these are extreme temps for where I live (Wales). Snow days had a white bobbly wool added to the centre gem/birthstone colour.
Months are separated by a full birthstone square. Final square is the joining colour and will have ‘2021’ crocheted on it.
Special days (birthdays/anniversaries) are marked with a sparkly light grey yarn instead of the joining yarn. I found that I needed to do the full final round (R4) on each ‘special’ square before joining adjacent squares to it, as otherwise it just didn’t look right.
I didn’t do a square a day - I recorded the daily high/low from a weather station online (TimeAndDate.com). I saved them up to do multiple squares in a session, because …. well, life and other projects ;)
Next time I might change the layout slightly, as the blanket is perhaps a little bit narrow - but I’ll just make the border wider on this one to compensate. Overall I’m really pleased with it - but also soooo glad it’s (nearly) finished!

Can’t believe I’m writing this, but I’ve just frogged 9 rows of border because I decided I need a grey row after every 3 rows of colour - I had a grey row after 2 rows early on (after turquoise & aqua). It either needs to be central (after petrol & seagreen), or at the end (after claret & burgundy).

Redoing border:
R8 blue/saxe (frogged from R9)
R9 grey 46g (frogged from R8)
R13 grey 50g (frogged from R12)
R10 petrol 30g (frogged from R10)
R11 seagreen 35g (frogged from R11)
R12 apple (frogged from R13)
Here’s hoping they will be enough :)

I’m on the home stretch - just 2 final rounds of red, then grey to finish… BUT I only have 49g of Claret Red left for R22, so it’s yarn chicken again :|
May 17, 2022
Phew! Managed to complete the final round of Claret Red - 9g left now., so used 40g total.
R23 Burgundy: used 37g from 100g ball (63g left). Not quite sure why this row used less total weight than some of the previous rows…

Finished 25 border rows, grey for the last 2, then a final row (R26) of UK dc also in grey, to neaten it a bit more. Ran out of yarn after 1.5 sides, with only 13g of oddments left - but then miraculously found 2 more balls :) Now I have 54g of ‘whole’ yarn left, plus oddments. Guessed that I used nearly 25 balls.
