I felt the need to use the Valentine advent kit for a “Find Your Fade”. What way to start the cast on with the first mini skein that was inspired by the theme of Friends? I knitted the first garter and lace sections and immediately did the color fade on the garter section. With 10 grams remaining, I put the first mini skein aside for emergency. I continued knitting with the second mini skein until I had 6 grams remaining. Even though I was on the lace section, I did the color fade with the third mini skein. When I ran out of the previous yarn, I would frog back and knit the row with the previous yarn and the new yarn held together, less worries about loose ends.

I had wondered if I could do a 20-row fade like what was done in “Free Your Fade” and “What The Fade?”. So I tried it with the purple and purple/red mini skeins. After the fade, I had very little yarn for the purple/red mini skein to do a few solos rows with. Since I’ll have to add more stitches to the shawl, I’m better off doing the fade that’s written in the pattern. So I continued following the pattern. I started the color fading when the old mini skein weighed 7grams.

Even after I reached 233 stitches, I continued following the pattern. But once I reached the 11th mini skein, I noticed that I wouldn’t have enough yarn to finish the shawl. I would probably have about 50 stitches remaining that needed to be on the right side. I didn’t want to add new yarn into the shawl so I frogged back until I had 205 stitches on the needle, right at the end of the lace section where the red and Orange were. I knitted the shawl, keeping 205 stitches on the needle. At the end, I ran out of yarn, but I had 3 stitches left. I made sure to finish the final rows with at least 17 lace rows, doing a color fade with the rest of the first mini skein and binded off.
