Notes

The first time I started this scarf was during the autumn of 2018. I used Red Heart Savers in red, white, and black. I ignored the fact that the scarf was too wide for my neck but what upset me was that the yarn felt too rough. One or two of those skeins must have been very old. I couldn’t enjoy knitting it when my hands focused on the feeling of the rough yarns and I kept putting it on hibernation until I found yarn substitutes to work with.

After frogging the Horde Scarf and finding a white skein in my stash, I decided it should be a Homespun scarf. Using my experience with the first scarf, I gave this scarf 2 stitch borders and reduced the web columns from 5 to 3. It took a little patience with the yarn’s inconsistency but it’s so soft to touch, a lot better than the previous scarf. And after wrapping the scarf around my neck, I felt confident that this scarf would be useful during harsh winter weather. It should be a little thicker than a normal double knitted scarf because of the unused yarn in the middle of the scarf, making it extra warm.

I kept knitting until I ran out of yarn and I ended up running out of the black yarn, probably because I was using it for both sides of the scarf. One lesson I learned is that if I do double knitting with 3 colors, I should have an extra skein of the color that will be used for both sides. I found a small leftover skein of black yarn to add to the scarf. It was enough for me to do one more web chart and finished the end of the scarf. I did a grafted bindoff.

I love double knitting but I hate detangling yarns after each row. And detangling 3 skeins at the end of each row was really annoying. But I wanted to try this technique as a scarf. So make it bearable, I would lay the three skeins in front of me in the order they would be used (front yarn, unused yarn, back yarn) and whenever it was time to switch colors, I moved the skein into it’s new position while keeping the yarn untangled. Usually it’s just the yarn being used for both sides that needs to be moved.

I love this scarf because it’s so warm and looks beautiful. I’m not sure if I will keep it or give it to my father. However, if I give it to my father, I have to make a double knitted scarf one for my mother before she steals it. She had called dibs on it when I was knitting the first scarf with Red Heart Savers yarn.
