Notes

My notes below describe 2 different throws using the same stitch pattern.

07-10-2018

I’m using a double broken rib stitch to knit an Afghan with Caron Tea Cakes. This is a bulky #6 yarn and I’m using 7 cakes. I love that it’s knitting up nice & thick. My first ball yielded 8.5” of blanket length… I think I will need 6 balls.

#11 circular needle, 40”
Cast on 130 stitches + 4 edge stitches (two on each side)

05-27-2018

For an adult throw I’m using approx. 1200 yards of worsted yarn. For a baby blanket, approx. 750 yards.

Note: I’m not worried about the colored stripes beginning or ending exactly on the edges. They end where they end and begin likewise. I think this simple pattern with its vertical characteristic is perfect for horizontal striping.

The stitch is BROKEN RIB with 2 extra stitches on each end (4 extra total) to create the smooth edge. I’m using a slip purlwise - purl method for the smooth edge because it’s circular needle friendly. A KNIT stitch is needed before the edge stitch or else the edge will look wonky.

BASIC PATTERN:
Size 9 circulars, 32”
Cast On 150 stitches + 4 stitches (2 on each end) for the edges. Long Tail CO.

TOP Border: Knit 6 rows
Row 1: (k2,p2), k2
Row 2: (p2,k2), p2
Row 3: purl
Row 4: knit
Repeat rows 1-4
BOTTOM Border: knit 6 rows
Use a stretchy BO

I placed stitch markers at every 10 stitches and also to separate the two edge stitches on each end.

LOOM PATTERN or IN-THE-ROUND:
Crochet Cast On
Top Border: 7 rows of garter (pkpkpkp)
Row 1-2: (k2,p2), k2
Row 3-4: knit
Bottom Border: 7 rows of garter (pkpkpkp)
Stretchy BO
