I casted on 90 instead of 80 and proceeded with 3x3 rib. I used an interchangeable circular needle for the ribbing (size 7) and fair isle charts (size 8). I added length to my circular cord and finished the hat using ‘magic loop’

After the ribbing, I adjusted the increase row since I began with a cast on of 90: ((k2, kfb) repeat) and that gave me the required 120 stitches for the color work.
