Notes

These were a gift to my sister, whose store-bought mittens were nearly threadbare.

I used the wonderful Kelley’s Mitten Class to learn how to knit these mittens.

The following are the steps I took:

Cuff
-KKPP 40 sts, for 18 rows high

Gusset
-K8 rows
-K12 rows, increasing every odd row where you want the gusset to be.
-Place gusset sts on loose thread
-On next row, add two sts where gusset sts would be

Body
-Knit 22 rows
-Then start decreasing every other row (k2tog …. ssk) for 10 rows.
-Kitchener stitch the remaining 10 sts together

Thumb
-Pickup extra sts until the total number is divisible by 3 (for me, it was 4 on one side, 3 on the other). K2tog first st on next row if necessary to achieve number.
-K12 rows
-Next row, k2tog every 6th and 7th st… then k a normal row, then k2tog every 5th and 6th st… until only 6 sts remain.
-Loop remaining yarn through sts and pull through
-Weave in ends
