I’ve been meaning to find time to make this lovely shawl for ages, so, with a Christmas present of Scheepjes Whirl, I decided now was the time!
Pattern
Clear and relatively easy to follow. Pictures help.
Quite a few popcorns… but never mind
I’ve just completed row 26 as I type this and have found a really helpful set of project notes by Irtward, which you can find here.
Because this is a repeat pattern, there are no stitch counts after row 26 on the pattern until you get to the border, so the list of stitchcounts is extremely helpful.
I’m adding them here as well (hope you don’t mind Irtward):

Yarn
I’ve never used Sheepjes Whirl before. I was looking forward to it.
Yarn is thinner and lighter than I usually work with and this is making me rethink the way I crochet a little.
It’s taken me up to row 26 to really get the hang of using this yarn effectively, but I think I’m there now…hopefully
10th January 2020
I keep dropping this to get on with other things, but it’s great to come back to and take my time over it.
I now have 2 more rows to do and I’ve completed the third extra repeat, but I’m sure I will need to do at least one more repeat if not two.
Shawl is now 115cms 45.25 inches) wide and 59 cms (23.25 inches) deep (measured as from centre neck to point of ‘V’).
So, it’s nowhere near long enough for an actual shawl - perhaps a shawlette or shoulder shawl?
I’ve notice that others who have used 4 ply yarn like this are photographed wearing their shawls as scarves, so they don’t need to be very long. But I actually want this to be a longer shawl…
I am also rapidly approaching the final colour of the whirl - deep blue, and at that point I have to decide whether to carry on with a whirlette in dark blue, or whether to begin a new whirl…. Will see when I get there
16th January on Row 67
After another break to sort out a temperature blanket, I’ve done a few more rows of shawl.
Now on Row 67 (that’s row 19 of the 4th repeat).
But it still seems a little on the short side.
And, as I am rapidly running out of whirl yarn, I have to decide soon whether to do another repeat after this one (and hence start a new whirl), or use a dark blue whirlette and finish off after completing this 4th repeat…
Measurements at row 67:
67 cms deep (26.5 inches)
137 cms across (54 inches).
To me, this doesn’t seem wide enough for a wrap around.
But there are still about 3 inches to go…
Update and completion November 2020:
I left this project for a while..,.. during the first lockdown I couldn’t bring myself to crochet.
But I picked it up again a couple of days ago.
Carried on using the Scheepjes Whirlette to finish, as the dark navy blue was a total match to the ending blend in the Whirl.
4th repeat now completed, plus last 3 rows.
Note for self: I used a 4.5mm hook in the last row to do the sl sts so that they didn’t pull.
Just blocked the shawl now:
Measurements now blocked:
Width across = 154 cms (60.5 inches)
Centre neckline to ‘V’ = 72 cms (28.25 inches)
Still have tassels to add and final photos to take and then it’s all done!
Phew!
I’m pleased I did this, but wouldn’t do it again in a hurry.
But it is an interesting pattern and it does feel quite an achievement to have completed it.
Tassels done, blocked and finished
Finished Measurements:
Width across = 154 cms (60.5 inches)
Centre neckline to ‘V’ = 72 cms (28.25 inches)
Tassel length: 2.5 cms (5 inches) each
