The first of many pairs of mittens that will be knitted for holiday gifts!

The rowan haze (which I am almost out of :(. It’s been a part of my stash for literally five years.) adds such an aura and warmth to the inside. These are legit north eurasian mittens. The Melody superwash I paired with the mohair instead of doing the variegated stripes that the pattern called for. The effect was a mellowed color with lots of dimension. The stripes would have been too much for me to deal with and also probably too gaudy for my mom. I’m content with my choice.

A quote that I found interesting from the Mostly Mittens pattern book:

“Before they could marry. girls of the Komi people in Russia were expected to weave at least 2 dozen towels and 100 yards of cloth, as well as make three-dozen pairs of stockings, the same amount of mittens, and one- or two-dozen shirts. The quantity and quality of work became the bride’s recommendation. In order to fill this order, girls began this preparation at the age of 10. All the goods were then presented to the family and relatives of the bridegroom at the wedding.” Complete ludicrousness!
