Notes

I didn’t take photos of the finished scarf before giving it away so I reproduced the pattern in a swatch using the same yarn the scarf was made with.

Made for my lovely local yarn store owner, Carol, who lost both her doggies fairly recently; Goldie and Cody (whom the yarn colorway is named after and was dyed specially for by Lorna’s Laces) were the shop-dogs and made the most wonderful greeters at My Sister’s Knits. This scarf was my tribute to the both of them, with two sets of paw prints at either end tromping toward each other and meeting in the middle.

My goal was to make doggy paw prints; I was inspired by the cat’s paw lace pattern and tweaked it to look more realistic. I worked that into a scarf pattern of my own design using garter stitch for the edging on the sides and ends.

PATTERN

Scarf is worked overall in stockinette stitch. Paw print pattern rows are worked on the RS (right side/front) of scarf.

  • Cast on 38 sts using fingering weight yarn on US size 7 needles
  • Knit a few rows (garter stitch) to create a border, ending on a WS row
  • Begin paw print pattern

Paw Print Pattern:
Row 1 (RS): k12, k2tog, yo, k24.
Row 2 (and every WS row): k6, p until 6 sts rem, k6.
Row 3: k10, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, k2tog, k21.
Row 5: k11, k2tog, yo,k1, yo, k2tog, k22.
Rows 6-10: Work in St st with 6-stitch garter edge
Row 11: k23, k2tog, yo, k13.
Row 13: k21, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, k2tog, k10.
Row 15: k22, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k11.
Rows 16-20: Work in St st with 6-stitch garter edge

  • Repeat all 20 rows of this paw print pattern until you reach the halfway point of your scarf, or until your first skein of yarn runs out.
  • Begin paw print pattern #2. (This reverses the direction of the paw print; if you’d prefer to have all the paw prints going one direction, then keep going using the first paw print pattern until you’re done.)

Paw Print Pattern #2:
Row 1 (RS): k11, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k22.
Row 2 (and every WS row): k6, p until 6 sts rem, k6.
Row 3: k10, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, k2tog, k21.
Row 5: k12, k2tog, yo, k24.
Rows 6-10: Work in St st with a 6-stitch garter edge
Row 11: k22, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k11.
Row 13: k21, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, k2tog, k10.
Row 15: k23, k2tog, yo, k13.
Rows 16-20: Work in St st with a 6-stitch garter edge

Work another few garter stitch rows for a border at the end of the scarf and bind off loosely.

Soak scarf in water and lay flat to dry, slightly stretching the stitches so that the paw prints are open and more visible.
