Instructions were to CO 43 sts which gives you three repeats of the chevron. I am working with fingering weight yarn and wanted a wider FO than that would yield so I added 2 repeats. (There are 13 sts/chevron; I added a total of 26 sts to the CO number.)
Chevron Stitch Pattern (amended for this project)
Row 1: k2, (kfb, k4, sl1 knitwise, k2tog, psso, k4, kfb) until 2 sts remain, k2.
Row 2: k2, p65, k2.
End on row 1 of chevron stitch pattern
Last row before bind off: k all
This scarf tells the basic story of the Outlander books, using 20 colors (68 stripes). You should recognize the characters and events from all 8 books, and everything is mostly in order. **Many (but not all, *gasp*) of the main characters, places and events are represented in (what I thought to be) appropriate colors.
The idea for this scarf evolved as I worked on it. At first, I had only intended on using colors to represent pieces of the first book; after that it was going to be a bit more abstract. But as I worked on it, I kept thinking of the books and how certain colors fit certain people and events and so on, so I kept up with translating the events of the books into colors. Maybe it’s cheesy but I like it. To me, it’s the story of Outlander. To everyone else, it’s just a scarf. :)
**[side note: I’m sure OL fans will note the absence of important characters such as Black Jack Randall, Geillis Duncan (who actually is in the scarf but not under that particular name), and the MacKenzies. For whatever reason, I could only ever associate the color red with BJR (due to his redcoat uniform, his anger, the literal blood on his hands, take your pick) and I didn’t want that much red in my scarf since I had already planned on assigning that color to Jamie, Bree, and Jem, so I just made do with a stripe for Frank. Call it artistic license. :) I also left out many things because in the end I just didn’t want it to be 8 feet long. ]

It was 5’ 6” after bind off, and 6’ after wet blocking. The 130-some ends took 3 1/2 hours to weave in.
I’d never worked with madtosh tml before so I wasn’t sure about how it would feel, but after a good soak it is very soft.
I was also concerned about possible bleeding. Many of the colors are very saturated (Tart, Cousteau, Mandala) but the only bleeding that occurred was where a red stripe slightly discolored the white one next to it, which I kind of expected. So only one stripe was affected, and only minimally. Very pleased with the FO!
