Chained 44 + 1 turning ch + chained 10 for a fold. It took me 9 repeats to achieve a circumference big enough for my 57 cm head, which is more than the estimate in the pattern. I guess I crochet more tightly than the designer does.

It took me a while to get familiar with the relief technique and the pattern symbols but once I got there the crocheting was really easy. However, this is not a pattern that I would recommend to an absolute beginner.

I’m really pleased with the result and it may well be that I crochet another hat in the foreseeable future!
