Notes

I came across this lovely free (!) pattern by Elsbeth Lavold , but only have about 820 yards in the Berroco yarn. I could just make a short sleeved version or I could try and incorporate the hemp yarn which I bought years ago in a little shop along a board walk in New Jersey.
I think I go with the challenge and see what happens.

Cast on 170 sts with both yarns using the hemp as my tail in long tail CO.
Working the reverse stockinette stitch rows in the hemp as well as the first knit row, then three rows in the cotton , THEN I join in the round ( leaving a side slit). I use both yarns as in helix knitting until I reach 4 to 7” (roughly a third to two thirds of the length to the underarm) then switch to cotton only. At the same time I decrease to size S by working ssk and k2tog at the sides.
I am hoping that once the hemp softens, the stitches will look more even.
It’s an experiment of sorts.
After six inches I stop using the hemp yarn, decrease 10 sts to 160 and continue knitting to 11.5” on US#9.

Errata: you do the single cable decreases on the armholes not six, but five times for size small.

A few changes/ shortcuts I am implementing:

  • I am leaving the blocking till the end.
  • I am leaving the shoulder sts live instead of undoing the bind off later and Kitchener stitch together before blocking.
  • I am continuing the cabled neckband on both left and right front from the live sts and Kitchener stitch together in the middle of the back.
  • Just as with the body I am knitting the sleeves in the round ( two at a time), adding a few rows in the hemp yarn in the lower part of the sleeves.

7.17. The body is done, now on to the sleeves.
Before starting on the sleeves
I am hesitant to use the hemp in the sleeves unless it softens, because it will be next to my skin.
Using the hemp at all started as a perceived necessity, but it looks like I have enough cotton yarn left for the sleeves now. However I do like the look and want to do a section on the sleeves as I did on the body. But I don’t want to jeopardize comfort.
Solution: I made the hemp into a skein and am soaking it for almost a day , then off into the freezer to break up the long strands of fiber, then dry it with my iron.
And here is the best advise I got from Kathleen, a fellow and very wise knitter: “ knit up a wee square….and shove it into your bra! You will know soon enough if it works.” I just love that advice joy
I will keep you all posted. Not starting on the sleeves until after the results on this are in sparkling_heart

8.19. The sweater went into hibernation for about a month, but working on the sleeves now. I CO using both yarns and will do a few rows in the hemp in the upper arm section before binding off and starting to work flat.

8.24. Sleeves are done; now I only need to seam the armholes.
