Somehow I started a tradition when my sister turned 70 and I made her a nice cozy blanket.
Sister’s blanket
A few years later it was my brother’s turn
Brother’s blanket
and now hubby’s.
As he doesn’t use blankets other than as a bed cover, I will make his extra big.
Take 1: cast on 264 sts on US# 9 and started on a seed stitch border. After just two rows I could tell this was going to be too thin.
Take 2: Double the yarn and cast on 110 sts ( did a swatch first). Used the German twisted cast on again.
Using different guernsey patterns over the 90 middle sts in the different color stripes (some from the book, some made up myself)
Five inch seed stitch border on bottom and top and over ten first and last stitches ( right and left border).
Every two skeins held double gives me 9 inches in length.
Will need another 14 skeins after the initial six for a total of 20 skeins ( 10 x 9”=90”).
My husband suggested to introduce red and in the middle more white.
Red sections: I used the Liver Bird Chart in the red sections.
Center White section: Since we are going with the Liverpool theme, I am writing out LFC’s motto / song “ YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE “. I am using the garter stitch alphabet from the Knitting Ganseys book, keeping the Purl stitches to make the letters on the RS of my knitting to make it a bit easier on me. I redesigned this section several times in my head. At first I wanted the motto all in one row and then flipped again, followed by two more Liver Birds in the red section, also flipped, so there wouldn’t be a top and bottom to the blanket. Then , using this alphabet which is rather large, I decided to do everything one- directional and stagger the words from left, center, right and center , but decided that that would look too busy. In the end all words are worked in the center with a few garter rows left and right between the words.
EDIT: After five rows I unraveled and re-did the letters with purls on both the RS and WS of the work rather than garter stitch for better readability.
April 2, 2022: Bound off all stitches in pattern on the larger needle with a single strand.
