We were wandering around outside at sub-freezing temperatures when I realized my toddler’s hands were both bare and cold. That simply won’t do! I’m casting on mittens RIGHT NOW!

Ribbing

Work 8 rows of ribbing instead of 6.

Gusset

To make gusset stitch count work, I knitted rows 0, 1, 2, 1, then on the next round, I put thumb stitches on holder and cast on 3.

Thumb

slip held stitches onto a needle, then pick up 5 stitches from hand. Purl the last of these 5 stitches together with the first of the thumb stitches. Purl around to the last of the thumb stitches, then purl 2 together through back loop with the first of the hand stitches. Purl 3. Place marker.
