After trying out double weaving for double width with some commercial cottons for a baby blanket, I graduated to using handspun for a lap blanket for me! My first time putting handspun on my floor loom after many successes using it on the rigid heddle loom. The brilliant colors of Hello Yarn mixed in weaving instead of in spinning. The warp is Tideline and half of the Kerala. The weft is Alpine and the other half of the Kerala. Almost all yarn used and only about 6” of waste in warp threads (.75 oz) since I tied on to the existing warp from the baby blanket. Pretty successfully used a separately weighted cotton thread at the fold of the doubleweave to keep my selvedges from scrunching together noticeably in what would be the center of the blanket.
Grist: 1754-1865 yds/lb
Blanket weighs just under 12 oz
Warp length: 69”
Warp width: 21” x 2 (doubleweave) 10/20 epi
Handwashed and fulled slightly in the dryer. I haven’t hemmed yet, but finished dimensions should be about 38” by 54”.
End result has a nice drape, is not quite soft, as could be expected from romney, and is warm and light.
