The pattern is a touch tricky with the “joint-tr” stitch; you have to work it carefully so the stitch doesn’t get extra thread in it, which will make the “v”s outside the center daisy and the mesh that the circle of daisies are in look very uneven and rough.
I had to redo Rnd 2 of the Outer Edge a time or two until I got the tension and the instructions correct. Be sure to check your work at the end of this round; you should have 80 ch-5 loops. When you start on Rnd 3, the remaining 5 stitches of the ch-9 loop are the first loop you crochet into. This detail caused a fair amount of grief until the obvious confronted me.
I also had to make some minor changes due to using a thicker thread than the pattern called for. I had to ch-3 instead of ch-2 for Rnd 6 of the Outer Edge, and ch-4 instead of ch-2 for Rnd 7.
I chose this pattern because of the lacy look, and the contrast between the lace and flowers with the rings reminiscent of filet crochet. In my mind, the more solid filet crochet-like rings bring up images of Grecian columns in old, classic styled buildings.
I’m thinking of stringing this into a large brass ring and putting crystals in the centers of the daisies, to make a sun catcher. The pattern just begs to be made with lots of different colors, but experience has shown me that the colors won’t last long in the sun. I’m hoping the “natural” colored thread will end up being fairly stable (i.e., when the color bleaches out, the thread will still be about the same color).
After looking around about blocking, I’ve decided to try Epsom salts (1:1 salts/water) instead of corn starch, since I’ve seen several comments from ladies who use it on curtains and it’s recommended for snowflakes since it tends to impart a bit of sparkle. Gave the doily a trial stretching (dry) and it seemed to be coming out to 17” diameter. Tried mounting it in a 19” macrame ring, but that’s too big. Can’t find any 17” rings, will have to order an 18” ring & hope & pray. Also using monofilament (an 8 lb. test, transparent light blue fishing line), & the only knots that hold are ones with multiple wraps a la french knots.
Finally got an 18” ring, and realized it was too small after I strung the doily on it. I put the 19” ring over it & restrung it easily onto the larger ring; I must not have had the doily wet enough or stretched right or something on my 1st try. I think it might even fit on a 20” ring, but I can’t find any anywhere on the internet for sale. I may have to buy some brass rod & bend my own ring!
It definitely needs some crystals….
