Seeing as how this scarf is crazy long and is nothing but the knit stitch all the way down, I’m actually going to try it as my first real project.

According to the Excel sheet I made to help me keep track of my progress, this scarf requires one to knit 1042 rows of garter stitch.

Status:

  • 4 out of 7 colors purchased.
  • I have learned to cast on.

Status:

  • 7 out of 7 colors purchased.
  • I have learned the knit stitch

7/8/2008
Status:

  • I’m comfortable with the knit stitch
  • 6 rows of purple done for first color block (30 to go)
  • Once I finish the first block, I’ll be waiting to find good YouTube video on how to change colors. (Cyberseams indicates one by them/her is in progress.)
  • In retrospect, choosing a first project that begins with casting on 65 Stitches might have been a bit ambitious. This scarf will have a lot of “character”.

7/11/2008:

  • I’ve finished my first block! 36 rows of purple. Yay!
  • I’ve successfully changed colors from purple to red after watching a youtube video by knittingtipsbyjudy!
  • I fixed a dropped stitch using a crochet hook to rethread the new stitch through the old and getting it back on the needle! Didn’t even cry or anything. :)

  • 100 rows of garter stitch is 1’. Since there’s 1096 rows in the scarf that means it will be about 11’ BEFORE it starts to stretch… And that’s if I continue to stitch as I have been. As I get used to knitting I’m starting to not knit quite so tightly. So it will probably be longer then that. I’m 5’1.5” and I live in So Cal… It gets cold in the Mountains of course but I’m rarely up there… I’m beginning to question my sanity.
  • Scarf is turning out awesome though.
