Notes

Dec 12, 2018 There was some pretty green variegated Kickapoo sock yarn left over from the “wicked“ socks, and what with a thread about variegated yarn which CathyWeeks just started and currently going strong in the Techniques forum, I decided to use the green in conjunction with some solid maroon Regia 4-ply using the helix one-stripe method.

I recognize that these two yarns are awfully close in “value” (would look the same shade of gray in a black-and-white photo--have a look for yourself, the stripes really don’t show in B&W) there are no real yarn shops within my reach, so I have to use what I have. And, anyway, the green yarn cost the earth, so I am GOING to use it up!

Nothing to the pattern I am using--a standard issue top-down sock with a single-color ribbed top, heel and toe. The helix technique is only in use to stretch out the leftover green!

I thought the afterthought heels on the wicked socks a bit tight, so am making a standard heel on this pair. On the wicked socks, I was knitting in a distracting environment so the make-a-tube method let me knit the socks with no shaping until I got to a quiet place, but I am in a quiet place now, so I can concentrate to do the shaping as-I-go…

Dec 16:I got down to the toe, but HATED how i knit the heel, so I pulled it out to the leg again and re-knit. Therefore, am only at the toe decreasing of the first sock. Sigh. You don’t knit shaped socks for a decade or two, and then you forget how you like to make heels.

Dec 18: Sock 1: done. Sock 2: started. Things would go faster if I wasn’t semi-binge-watching the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on TV. I can knit and listen to books on tape, but TV? Not so much…

December 23: Finished. No second sock syndrome, thankfully.

Heels (note to self) Make tab, slipped st selvedge. Heel=isolate a series of ribs (12 or 13 sts) in center-center of heel, starting one set of ribs every fourth row. Turn heel keeping these centered ribs undecreased. PU in one color, then work one color plain, one color for the decreases. Maybe next helix sock, instead of a one-color heel, try a striped heel?
