My son chose this pattern for a hat. Only doing 4 pattern repeats instead of 5 and skipped part of the pattern to make the hat shorter. Using a 3mm needle. Hopefully it will fit a 9 year old.

And it does fit him perfectly! Very pretty pattern. Added a pompom :)
