I had not planned to add a project for this, but …

My objective is to make a Derecho fit for Texas winter, which includes longer sleeves. I plan to make them 3/4 length … looking forward to it.

I chose a smaller needle size to produce a slightly denser fabric as for the tee this summer. I’m making the same size, though, I don’t think it matters too much, I typically don’t knit tight fitting garments.

The yoke so invites to experiment! Between the increases you have about 10 rows to play with (a row more or less doesn’t really matter). So I flipped through Mary Jane Mucklestone’s book “150 Scandinavian Motifs” and looked for three motifs that would fit the bill.

I had the traditional reindeer pattern in mind, but 10+/-
rows are really pushing it for that. But then I saw the scottie dogs … bingo!

The rest … is history.

EOB1. The first ball got me to right after the first body shaping decrease.

It’s the first time in a long time that I knit the same pattern twice. I don’t mind at all, but usually there are so many things that I wish to try that I don’t take the time to do a pattern twice. The Derecho is truly a staple to my knitting repertoire.

Amy mentioned that there were several Derechos at the Rhinebeck festival … I’m not surprised!

EOB2 as of last night. Brought me to the end of the front hem shaping.

I’m amazed again how far I got with only two balls of Remix Light.

All done!

And here are the sleeve instructions for 3/4 sleeves. I don’t think that the instructions significantly change for different sizes, but here you go for the size I made, size 43”:

  • Start the sleeves as directed in the instructions.
  • Knit 4 rounds.
  • Decrease round: K1, k2tog, knit to 3 sts before end, ssk, k1.
  • Knit 3 rounds.
  • Repeat the last four rounds until there are 60 sts left.
  • Knit 25 rounds after the last decrease.
  • Knit the kitten pattern (pg. 76 in the book). Remember - since you work top down - that you have to knit the kittens top down, too. Just turn the book around and start at the head.
  • To avoid snatching long threads … if the distance is more than 5 sts, twist the yarns half way.
  • After the kitten pattern, knit one round.
  • Change to smaller needles.
  • “Knit one round, purl one round” three times.
  • Knit and bind off all stitches loosely.
  • Weave in all ends.

Wear and enjoy!
