I’ve never seen slip stitches with yarn in front and back and garter combined as intricate as in this scarf! Fun to knit and brilliant in outcome.
It truly is a long narrow scarf that greatly wraps around the neck twice, and that without being bulky.
I used natural wool “fingering”, which is thicker than commercial fingering (probably comparable to commercial DK weight). The yarn is the Rogue Skein Free Spirit Signature Blend Alpaca/Merino/Mohair. I used two skeins, one in 2-ply turquoise (Color “A”), the other one was one ply turquoise and a ply of variegated orange, which I decided to use as Color “B”.
I could adjust the pattern easily to the thicker yarn, and I’m adding the notes here of what I did. Martha was so kind to let me know how long each section is so that I could adjust the number of repeats accordingly. This way the scarf came out in the same measurements.
The beginning of the knitting was slow going: The pattern stitch needed to get used to, and there were increases which needed to be integrated into that pattern. However, patience and paying attention to the chart did the job. After the first increase section it was easy sailing and fun to knit.
Here are the notes with the adjustments that I made for using thicker yarn for each section:
Garter with increases: No changes.
Slip stitch pattern with increases: I reached the proper width after one less repeat than asked for (30 sts).
1st Slip stitch pattern - no increases: I worked one less repeat that asked for (length about 15”).
Increase section - solid Garter Stitch: I only increased one stitch to adjust for the thicker yarn and still prepare for the next pattern stitch section (31 sts; 30 rows or 3”).
2nd Slip stitch pattern: I worked two less repeats than asked for (length about 22”).
Decrease section - striped Garter Stitch: No changes.
