I’ve been wanting to knit a toe-up ribbed sock for ages. Rather than re-inventing the wheel, I used an existing cuff-down pattern; it took me a little while to get my head around the pattern as it’s written for DPNs, and I use magic loop. I got there in the end though :)

I use Sockmatician’s Toe-Ups as my basic sock, which requires a multiple of 4 stitches on the sole stitches. The basic rib pattern is k3, p1. For the instep, you need a multiple of 4 + 3, and for the back of the leg, you need a multiple of 4 + 1.

I worked the toe as I usually do, decreasing 1 stitch in the centre of the very last round on the instep needle. I left the sole stitches as they were. I had 31 stitches on my instep needle, and 32 on my sole needle.

Once I’d completed the heel, I increased 1 stitch in the centre of my sole needle to give me 33 stitches on that needle.

Overall, I’m pleased with how they turned out. The only aspect I’m not that happy with is the cast off. I used the surprisingly stretchy cast off, and it all looks a bit frilly at the top. However, these socks were a bit longer than I usually make them and they came over the top of my sock blockers, so that might explain it. I know they will look fine when they’re worn.
