My eldest sister is very sensitive to wool and the Pure Joy shawl I made her for her birthday was irritating her neck. She requested this instead after seeing my sister Rhonda’s Golden Dickey in the Regina Episode. Happy to oblige!
Final Measurements and gauge:
17” length from top of collar to the bottom hem on the front.
12” wide across the front.
8.5” length from top of collar to the bottom hem on the back.
11.5” wide across back.
GAUGE: 17st x 26 rows knit flat in st. st on US 9
HERE ARE MY NOTES:
Using the Winter Wisps Pattern as a guideline I did the following to achieve this Dickey using exactly one skein of Malabrigo Worsted single ply.
With US 8/5mm 16 inch circulars, CO 76 sts and work K2 P2 in the round for 3-inches/7cm
Switch to US 9/5.5mm circulars and place markers as follows: K2 P2 over first 12sts, PM, K2 P2 over next 24 sts (back stitches), PM, K2 P2 over next 12 sts, PM, K2 P2 over next 28 sts (front) and you should be back at the beginning of round stitch marker for BOR.
SEE 2nd PHOTO FOR REFERENCE
Work the next Round as follows:
K2 P2 across 12 sts (shoulder stitches), sm, K24 (back stitches), sm, K2 P2 the next 12 shoulder stitches, sm, K28 to BOR.
Now work 14 rounds increasing (see below) using KFB before and after each shoulder stitch marker (maintain the ribbing and there are no increases inside the 12 shoulder sts - just on the front and back sts - think raglan increasing.
WORK INCREASE ROUNDS AS FOLLOWS:
K2 P2 across first 12 sts, sm, K1FB then knit across (these are the back stitches) to one stitch before the next stitch marker, K1FB, sm, k2, p2 across 12 shoulder stitches, sm, K1FB, then knit across (front stitches) until you get to one stitch before the BOR beginning of round, K1FB. You will have increased 4sts per round.
Repeat this increase round a TOTAL of 14 times.
After 14 rounds there will be a total of 132 sts around the needle =56 sts on the front panel, 12 shoulder stitches, 52 sts on the back panel and 12 shoulder stitches.
Round 15: BO the 12 arm stitches using knit bindoff. Knit across the 52 back stitches, remove marker and bind off the other 12 shoulder stitches, remove the sm, and knit across the 56 front stitches.
Now you will work on the front and back separately with US 9/5.5mm. Knitting flat. Keep the back stitches on a spare needle, Barber cord or waste yarn while working the front panel portion below.
WORKED FLAT
EDGES
To get nice edges work the first 2 sts and the last 2 stitches on each row as follows:
(RS) Sl1P wyib, K1 knit across row to the last 2 sts and Sl1P wyib, P1.
(WS) Sl1P wyib, P1 purl across row to the last 2 sts and Sl1P wyif, P1.
On the front portion (chest) Work in stockingnette stitch until front measures 15.25” from top of collar, then work K2 P2 ribbing for 1” and bindoff.
Once the front is finished. Rejoin remaining yarn to the back stitches (work edges neatly as described above). Knit until back measures 7.25” from top of collar, then work K2 P2 for 1” and bindoff.
Weave in ends. Use an iron and wet towel to steam block the Dickey and edges to keep from rolling and to lie flat.
