Edit: Finished! Took a couple days to cast on for the second sock, but I did. No second sock syndrome for me! Tried following the pattern I wrote from the first sock, made a few stitch count mistakes in the heel turn and gusset, not much, 1 or 2 stitches off. Enough to make me go “wuuuh?” Also not sure why I decided to pick up so many gusset stitches off the heel flap, I didn’t need that many. It’s ok though, the husband has big heels. Think I could have ended the toe a decrease earlier. Teach me to ‘design’ something I’ve never knitted before while watching a movie I hadn’t seen yet. :)
Hopefully I’ll get some pictures of them on his feet soon.

I have been nearly obsessed with making a pair of socks lately, so I’d been doing a lot of reading up on construction and different patterns, basic how-tos. My friend sent me a copy of a book on knitting socks and I read through that. I had the basics of how a sock should be constructed so I got some yarn and needles and dove right in sans pattern.
I made a square and counted my guage, 10 sts in 2 inches. Measured his ankle (which is very beefy), calculated and added 2 stitches for even ribbing which I did on 2x2. I also went down a needle size the yarn suggested for a nice thick fabric. It’s very dense and warm.
It’s a basic top down, heel flap with a wedge toe construction. Carried the ribbing all the way down to the toe where I did a different colour. Not because I wanted the contrast but I was afraid of running out of yarn. stupid big feet.
One sock finished and will be casting on the second after I finish chores.
