Finished!
I must say that I don’t really like the combination of colours but I knew that before I started. Other people love them and they do show the design very well. The more you look at it the more you see.
I used 16 shades of DK yarn (plus the border). They were mostly Stylecraft but I used a few other brands to get better colours and, consequently, some squares are a bit bigger than others. That doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things as they all pull each other into line.
The darker photo shows the effect of the diagonal lines of holes. The effect varies according to the lighting conditions and what is behind the hanging.

The idea for this came from Benguin. He was doing some scientific work and said ‘My Mum could knit that!’. (This is what happens when you’re brought up by someone who constantly goes round spotting interesting patterns to knit.)
The colours from the original idea were more subtle and blended together more than these but it isn’t easy to get 16 colours that blend together to form a rainbow effect.
It is one quarter finished. I think it will be much more striking when the rest is done.
