Notes

This was a real combined effort. WoolhelminaToo designed the butterfly and then it was up to me to turn it into reality using temporary cast-ons and mitred square techniques. It was fun to do.

The chart is slightly more difficult than our other illusion knits. If you have worked any of the others you will find it easy but we don’t recommend it as a first-ever illusion knit.

The shawl shown was made using DK yarns. Some of the photos show the fancy butterfly-like border. The pattern also has instructions for a simpler border. I used about 400 metres of each colour for the main part of the shawl with extra for the borders.

Note:
My first attempt was using a variegated yarn. The design is so subtle that the changing colours interfered with the overall perception and it was not possible to see the tracery on the wings as clearly as we wanted. The smoky grey seemed a good compromise.
