Notes

I made this over twenty years ago to demonstrate one of the main principles of our Woolly Thoughts book - that squares can be made from any yarn, knitted at any tension, and they will always fit together.

I recently rediscovered the jacket which has been worn a great deal. Some of the shapes are now a bit distorted.

The squares are made from any black yarn I could find at the time. There are some fine silky yarns, some made from shredded nylon intended for making kites, and many thicknesses in between. There are also squares made from velvet and corduroy fabric. It is not the most comfortable garment to wear because some areas are thin and flexible and others are much stiffer.

In the same year I made this I took it to exhibit at an event and was severely criticised by the organiser because it was just ‘plain black and boring’. A few years later that lady wrote to me to apologise because she had just used the book herself and had come to understand what the jacket was showing.
