Notes

I like how this knot is looking so far. This will be similar in shape to my ‘Zorba Cap’, but with an Irish feel.
I was inspired by the cap worn by the Cousin Eamon Character in John Sayles’ beautiful 1993 film ‘The Secret of Roan Inish’. I named this design after a favourite Gaidhlig language love song. (My heartfelt gratitude to Sìne NicFhionnlaigh of Tong who penned this beautiful love song to her own boatman back in the late 19th century)

I listed 3 recommended yarns above, I really wanted to use an Irish yarn but this prototype is 220. Black Water Abbey worsted is the US distributor’s name for the Irish Yarn Cushendale dk (which is a ‘heavy dk’ in Ireland, same weight as worsted in the US) I wish I had used a US #4 or #5 instead of a #6, I would have liked it better at a closer gauge (but I am a very relaxed gauge knitter, most people would use a #6 with this yarn to get the desired 5 st per“ gauge -blocked-)
My daughter ran off with this hat the minute I showed it to her (a good sign of a successful design)-2nd photo is proof it is seldom taken off & cozy enough for a baby’s cheek- also a visual reminder that I have very strong Irish pale skin, dark hair & pointy chin genes!
A note on the knot- I drafted this knot based on the knot I charted for the ‘Calanais Knot-head Hat’ well over a decade ago (see bottom photo)- this being the textured rather than intarsia version.
