Gauge:
- 18 sts x 24 rows = 4” in stockinette
- 18.5 sts x 25 rows = 4” in pattern
- 21-st pattern repeat = 4.5” wide
- 28-st sleeve panel = 5.5” wide
I used aran weight yarn instead of DK weight and my gauge was still smaller than the pattern’s.
Instead of SSSK I used SK2P.
I changed the small lace panel because mine was looking sloppy. I added two extra purl sts on each side of the eyelets so the pattern repeat is 21 sts instead of 19 sts and the sleeve panel is 28 sts instead of 24 sts.
I cast on 93 sts for the front and back instead of 83 sts (4 pattern repeats + 9 sts).
The pattern says the sweater is 15” long but doesn’t take into account the 1.5” of shoulder shaping, so the finished length is actually 16.5” long.
I knit the sweater 14” long. I started the front neck and shoulder shaping at 12.5”.
I used 28 sts for the shoulders instead of 24 sts. I bound off 13 sts for the base of the front neck instead of 11 sts. I worked the rest of the front neck shaping per the pattern.
Since I had more shoulder sts than the pattern, I worked the short rows differently. I worked the first short row 7 sts from the end instead of 6 sts and worked the following short rows 6 sts before the DS instead of 5 sts. So my shoulder shaping is 8 sts + 7 sts + 7 sts + 6 sts instead of 7 sts + 6 sts + 6 sts + 5 sts.
The pattern has you work one less row for the back than the front. I added an extra row RS to the back for 9 rows of shoulder shaping. I knit 28 shoulder sts, BO 37 back neck sts, knit 28 shoulder sts.
I seamed the shoulders using a three needle bind off.
I went down a needle size for the neckband. I picked up 81 sts for the neckband: 39 sts along the back neck and 41 sts along the front neck. I used Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.
I did not sew the side seams before picking up the sts for the sleeves and I worked the sleeves flat instead of in the round. I worked the first sleeve row as a standard WS row.
The pattern says to leave 6.5” open for the armholes but the upper arm circumference is supposed to be 11”. To my knowledge, the length of the armhole dictates the upper arm circumference for drop sleeve sweaters.
I knit the sleeves 17” long instead of 18” long.
I picked up more sts for the sleeves for an upper arm circumference of 12.5” instead of 11”.
I picked up 62 sts for a 12.5” upper arm circumference and decreased to 44 sts for an 8.5” lower arm circumference. I decreased every 12th row x2 and every 10th row x7 for a total of 94 rows/15.5” long. I worked 3 rows even, 4 rows of garter, and BO using Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.
