Notes

Gauge:

  • Crochet: 5.5 rows = 4” in HDC
  • 10 sts x 12 rows = 4” in stockinette
  • 14 sts x 12 rows = 4” in rib

Frank’s chest is 36” and his neck is 20”.

I originally crocheted this sweater per the pattern in size XL with the chest as a granny square and with HDC around the neck. It ended up being a massive tube that hung to the ground. I made so many changes that this sweater doesn’t resemble the original design very closely.

Since my crochet gauge was smaller than the pattern’s I worked 14 granny square rounds instead of 13 rounds for a 21.5” square.

I added neck shaping on the last granny square round. On the top corners I omitted a corner cluster and instead chained 2 for an 18” width.

I picked up 37 sts across the back neck and joined in the round, decreasing to 36 sts. I worked 6” in rib and BO using Jeny’s Surprisingly Strechy Bind Off.

I replaced the chest granny square with a knit strap and added a button to the other side of the back. Starting 11” down from the top of the granny square, I picked up 8 sts and increased to 10 sts on the first row. I worked 10.5” even in rib. I didn’t bother to make any buttonholes because the button fits between the sts.

I used a 1 1/8” button from Michaels that was part of a large assortment of buttons.
