Lilac Time according to the Runner directions in garden string, about size 10 crochet thread in weight, with a center cast on (Judy’s Magic Cast On) and single center repeat.
Kinzel’s directions call for knitting in the round with the center open, and sewing the center closed afterwards: I used a center cast-on and knitted it in the round from the center outwards so I would not have to sew it up.
I am simultaneously knitting this in cobweb merino wool to wear as a stole.
In order for the centers to line up (actually, be offset by one stitch), the start-of-round must be the last two stitches of one long side. Otherwise the middles don’t line up, see very first (very bottom) photo.

I started the string version to figure out how to knit from the center out and not have to sew it up afterwards, then liked it enough to keep knitting simultaneously with the merino version.
I bought the string at an estate sale, out of someone’s garden shed, complete with little black oil spots. I am hoping these will wash out (or at least lighten) when I am finished!
