I did not realize that the chart is backwards. I started with the dark color yarn. Following the chart as written, the light color is predominant on the bottom transitioning to dark. It should be predominantly dark at the bottom. So if you want it to look like the photo in the pattern, use the light color when a dark square is shown and the dark color when a light square is shown.
