My brother has been begging for a Viking Hat with full beard, and this last time… I got inspired. All other projects aside for him, and a WAY EPIC pattern, because my brother is the kind of guy that would be a live liver donor. No lie, he’s fasting from liver damaging things like BEER to donate part of his liver to his friend who has a chronic disease. He’s the best example of selflessness I’ve ever seen. So, I’m knitting for him, before everyone else that’s on my list, including me. He now brews beer too, and is encouraging his wife to go to the Great American Beer Festival even though he can’t, because THAT is the bighearted, wonderful man he is. I will do this. I am setting a deadline.
I got this in the mail in time for the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. He’s the designated driver, but that doesn’t mean he can’t sport a wiggity-whack beard! Cheers, “Unca-dude”!!!
Random Pattern Notes
This is a morph of the original pattern, feministy’s notes on her Brendan’s Beard project, and sallyinwales’ bobble notes on her Spectacle Helm Bearded Hat.
Gauge on US 8
20sts - 4in
6r - 1in
CO 80
Moss stitch four rows, knit two rows, bobble row as described by sallyinwales:
“The rivets are just a basic bobble, in this case worked over 2 stitches (k,p,k into the next two stitches to give 6, turn, p6, turn k6, turn, p6, turn, sk2p twice and you are back to 2 stitches with a nice fat bobble).”
Bobble over 2 sts, K8
Knit two rows, moss stitch four rows
August 4
I would add two more knit rows next time to give more “stage” for the bobbles. Also, 80 sts? When my brain woke up I realized this would make a small hat! I took it off the needles to redo it, slapped in on my head, and found it fit okay. I picked them back up and decided to keep rolling. We’ll see!
Panels:
K2, moss stitch 8 stitches, K12 to last 10 sts, which are knit
