This pattern stitch is PERFECT for these yarns--the malabrigo is soft and nondescript and has a consistent gauge, so using it as the CC backgrounds it and puts it right up against the neck where you want softness. The MC yarn is allowed to pop forward where all that color can be seen, and the longer honeycomb sts really show off its texture.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS:
brk: brioche knit - knit next st together with its adjacent yarnover
brp: brioche purl - purl next st together with its adjacent yarnover
For MC, hold two strands of handspun yarn together. For CC, hold two strands of malabrigo together.
SCARF
Using size 15s and CC (brown), cable CO 22 sts (20 for pattern, one at each end for sl st for clean edge).
Setup row 1: Using MC, k1 (yf, sl st, k1wyif) k1
SLIDE to other end of needle
Setup row 2: using CC, k1, yf (sl yo, p2) k1
TURN
Row 1(RS, MC): sl 1 (brp, sl st wyif, yo) brp, sl st wyif, k1wyif, SLIDE
Row 2 (RS, CC): sl 1 (k1, go behind yo to k1, sl yo) k1, TURN
Row 3 (WS, MC): sl 1, brk (yf, sl1, brk wyif) yf, sl1, k1 wyif, SLIDE
Row 4 (WS, CC): sl 1 (p1, sl yo, p1) k1, TURN
Continue until scarf is as long as you’d like or yarn is gone, whichever comes first (using all the yarn should give you about 46” of scarf). If you want to make a matching headband, stop at 40”.
Using size 17 or 19 needle and CC, P2tog bindoff. Weave in ends.
HEADBAND
Using MC, cabla CO 10 sts.
Setup row 1 (MC): (yf, sl st, k1wyif), SLIDE
Setup row 2 (CC): (sl yo, p2) TURN
1 (MC): (sl 1 wyif, yo, brp) SLIDE
2 (CC): (go behind yo to k1, sl yo, k1) TURN
3 (MC): (yf, sl 1, bro wyif) SLIDE
4 (CC): (sl yo, p2) TURN
Repeat these 4 rows until work measures 16”. Drop CC.
Underside of headband (thinner part):
Switching to size 11 needles, k across.
Setup row 1 (WS): k1, yf, sl 1 (k1wyif, yf, sl 1)
Setup row 2 (RS): maintaining the last yo from the previous row, k1, slip the yarnover, k1, (go behind yo to k1, sl yarnover, k1)
One-color brioche pattern:
1 (WS): (yf, sl1, brk wyif)
2 (RS): (k1, go behind yo to k1, slip yo)
3 (WS): (brk, yf, sl 1 (brk wyif, yf, sl1)
4 (RS): maintaining yo from end of previous row, k1, slip yo, k1 (go behind yo to k1, slip yo, k1)
Repeat these four rows a total of three times.
Drop one strand, switch to size 9 needles, repeat these four rows three more times (twisting dropped strand with working strand at start of each WS row to carry it along).
Pick up dropped strand and switch back to size 11 needles, then repeat these four rows three more times.
Bind off leaving a tail. Use tail to sew bind-off edge to cast-on edge.
