I don’t use too much lace yarn, so I have no idea why I ever thought it was such an awesome idea to buy a lace yarn sampler. I wanted to make these mittens but didn’t want to go out and buy more yarn since I’m trying to not let the yarn get out of control.
When I was knitting with some friends I was like, I’m going to make these mittens and hold the lace yarn double. They were like, that’s a terrible idea. So that motivated me to figure out a way that it wouldn’t be so terrible. I wound the yarn into two balls and then wound those balls together. It worked out pretty well.
In the end I was sweating and worrying about having enough yarn but I do that with every project. I think I just wind them tighter at first because I usually have quite a bit left over, which I did here.
About the pattern: this pattern assumes that you know basic mitten construction. It also isn’t written very well and doesn’t seem to follow most pattern rules. I mean, even little things like K1 were written like 1 K, so that was irritating. It wouldn’t have been if it were a free pattern but I felt super justified in my irritation since I paid quite a bit of money for it. Also, stuff like joining for the thumb was just sort of glossed over. I mean, again, not a big deal when free but come on- even if I don’t need that info, I can skip over it.
While I am really pleased with how these mittens turned out, I would not recommend this pattern. Also, these took me forever. That’s more me and color work though than anything else. Plus my concentration just wasn’t there. Still- really happy with how they turned out. I didn’t want to give them away.
