I used size 8 needles. My gauge is 4stitches/inch. I cast on 92, so that when I did the bind off I would have 80 which would be about 20inches.

I did the seed stitch for the brim as pattern indicated. Then I did garter stitch for the body of the hat. Decreased rows starting with:

K8, k2tog
K
k7, k2tog
k

Then continued on with bind off in the pattern where it started at k6, k2tog.

I picked up stitches on the edges to make earflaps.

Then I stitched black Xs over the seam.
