I am following this pattern, which is a guest post by Whistle and Ivy / Bethany Dearden on Stitch and Unwind.
I am adjusting the pattern slightly to work with the yarn I’ve chosen, it doesn’t have a lot of stretch to it and my gauge isn’t a match to the designer but I feel able to adapt this pattern to work with these issues.
For the Ribbed Band I have followed instructions, however I only needed 35 rows. She said it should measure 15.5” unstretched, as mine doesn’t have much stretch I’ve done my band to 18”. It has an approx stretch of an inch or so, which should fit the young boy I am making this for.
For the main hat I was doing rows of 36 stitches, this is counting the Chain 2 as a stitch which each row starts with. I continued alternating 2 rows of each colour till I has an approx height of 7.5” inches, as in all other hat patterns for this age group this has been the height of the hat. I did 3 sections in Evergreen and 2 sections in Blue Moon, I then did one more row of DC which I did in Blue Moon as it was following on from two rows of Evergreen. I plan to finish off the hat with a blue pom pom which is why I choose the last row to be in this colour, and I didn’t know if it would look right to do an extra row of Evergreen.
I followed the instructions for how to close the hat, I first tried it with one strand of my yarn but when I pulled it to secure it snapped (yarn broke). I then re-did it with two strands of my yarn and this worked perfectly, as it gave added strength. I used the same colour yarn as the last row, so I used Blue Moon. It’s now ready to be finished off with a pom pom.
I checked the size after closing up the hat and I’m happy with the size
. I even compared it to another hat I made for the same age bracket and it’s pretty much exactly the same size so I’m hoping it will for well!
I’m so happy and excited with the results of this hat using my chenille cotton, it looks so good now that it looks like a proper hat and I’m excited to add the finishing touches before I mark this project as complete.
I can see myself making more of these hats in this yarn now
, I know how it works and how to adapt the pattern to the size I need using this yarn. I’m excited
might even look at making one for me when I have the time!
Please note the photos aren’t always doing this beautiful yarn and the colours justice, but I am trying my best to get the best photos I can. It really does look so much better in person, although I think I’ve got some good photos showing how great this hat looks using this beautiful cotton chenille.
