Notes

My gauge was 5 st per inch.

I used exactly 2 balls of yarn and the finished sack measures 14.5” lengthwise and 11” diameter at the widest point.

Cast on 92 st (or more, but must be divisible by 4) with 4mm needles and short circulars.

k1 p1 rib for 1.5 ins
k3 p1 rib for another 1.5 ins

Change to 5mm needles

Stockinette stitch (knit in the round), increasing 1 stitch every fifth row - k1, kf&b

I knitted until I had increased to 106 st and had just enough yarn to knit a final 4 rounds. If I were to knit this again I would definitely break into another skein and knit a few more inches. The last photo shows my 1-month old grandson Alex modelling the sack, and he could do with a bit more growth room lengthwise. There’s plenty of room around his chest, however.

Final step… Turn work inside out and divide stitches evenly onto double-pointed needles. I wrapped a couple of those tiny elastic loom bands on the needle tips to serve as a stitch stoppers, then did a 3-needle bind off.

I can’t say enough good things about the Artesano Merino DK yarn I used. It’s a heavy DK, closer to a light Worsted I’d say, and knits up beautifully. No splitting, no knots, no fuzziness and it’s beautifully soft and springy. Washes well, too.
